What Makes the Perfect Armored Vehicle?

If you have ever been employed by the military, fire department or police organizations, you will probably understand the importance of certain vehicles commonly known as BATTs or RDVs. Civilians, however, may not as understand what those terms even mean.

BATT stands for Ballistic Armored Tactical Transport, and the best visualization of them is the heavy-duty cash transit trucks often spotted outside banks or department stores. RDVs are Rapid Deployment Vehicles, which are typically either armored or unarmored. Have you ever driven by a crime scene and noticed a box-esque truck vehicle with a crew nearby? RDVs are often used as a command center or as a transport of SWAT units.

For some military operations, a tank-like vehicle is used to transport a platoon to a desired destination, can be used to fight against mob crowds as an intimidation factor, or can be utilized as a barricade. Large vehicles are not all that the armored vehicle industry has to offer. Did you know that trucks, SUVs, and sedans can also be armored?

A couple of months ago, our recent blog post discussed what types of clients would use a certain company’s armored vehicles, as well as briefly covering the types of vehicles that these clients would look for. Celebrities and private elite clients often use luxury vehicles made by high-end brands like Cadillac and Rolls Royce. Families could benefit from having an armored Suburban or Land Cruiser if security is an important feature to them. Regardless of the types of vehicle and who the drivers are, what exactly makes the perfect armored vehicle?

The level of security is the foremost determining factor in what creates the ultimate armored vehicle. The necessary thickness and type of steel plating to protect the main frame of your vehicle varies due to the type of protection package needed. If you live in a bad area where gunfire or major gang activity occurs, you would most likely qualify for B4 protection. This classification protects against common hand guns, with bullet sizes ranging from .22 to 9 mm. Vehicle plating helps its occupants from being impacted by bullets long enough for you to escape. Elite clients most likely prefer B6 protection because the size of bullets and types of guns that eject these bullets can often be used by a sniper or someone who could be a serious threat to them. Military and tactical organizations, such as police and sheriff departments, tend to opt for B6 to B7 ratings for even further protection.

Other components to the perfect armored vehicle include bullet resistant glass. Did you know that ballistic glass is actually a layered combination of plastic and glass? No standard glass is truly bullet proof, but it does give intended targets a longer time to prepare an escape plan.

Speaking of an escape plan, the following list of armored vehicle options help aid fleeing a dangerous situation quickly and more efficiently:

  • Run-Flats - allows a vehicle to continue running even if tires are shot at
  • Smoke Screen Machines - creates a smoke screen thick enough to distract your attacker as you escape
  • Strobe Lights - potentially blinds your attackers while encouraging other vehicles to ease out of the way as you plan your escape
  • Vehicle Component Plating - protects key elements of your vehicle, such as your gas tank, battery and radiator, from potential bullet spray
  • Floor Blast Protection - if your vehicle is exposed to an explosive device, floor blast protection will keep you safe
  • Vehicle Compensation - since armored vehicle protection is drastically heavier than stock vehicles without protection, compensation needs to be made for the extra weight in the door hinges, suspension, and brakes

For those serious about protection within their vehicle, extra features are available outside the standard armoring packages. If you are interested in purchasing a vehicle already armored, or you seek to customize one, speak to an armored vehicle company representative about the extra features that will offer protection.

PARKER COUNTY — Parker County Commissioners authorized the purchase of a BATT (Ballistic Armored Tactical Transport) AP SWAT vehicle for the Weatherford-Parker County Special Operations Group Monday.

The vehicle — which will be used to transport SWAT teams to a call out location — replaces a 1980 Peacekeeper armored truck purchased as military surplus about three years ago, Capt. Mike Morgan, commander of the SWAT team, said. It will be funded through a $196,600 Homeland Security grant.

Morgan said the vehicle is “far superior” to the current vehicle in terms of armor protection, deployment and tactical abilities and operational storage.

According to literature from The Armored Group, LLC, the BATT can accommodate 10 to 12 geared officers and stop .50-caliber rounds.

The company will construct the vehicle from a 2012 Ford F-550 commercial chassis, Morgan said, in a process that will take three to four months.

The sheriff’s office plans to add a winch kit and other improvements by drawing from the department’s forfeiture fund, he said.

“The way things are going in this county, you’ll probably be using this a lot,” Precinct 1 Commissioner George Conley said.

“It’s unfortunate that little ‘ol Parker County has reached that point,” Judge Mark Riley agreed.

The Weatherford-Parker County Special Operations Group operates under the direction of Sheriff Larry Fowler and Chief Mike Manning of the Weatherford Police Department.

The SWAT team is made up of volunteers from the sheriff’s office, the Weatherford police and the Parker County Fire Marshal’s Office, Morgan said.

The team has one commander, 12 SWAT operators and four hostage negotiators.

“Parker County is seeing an increase in the number of armed calls and encounters,” Morgan said. “The Batt provides a significant level of protection for the SWAT Team when called out.”
